At My Credit Specialist, we speak to people every day who have found mistakes on their credit report and either don’t know how to correct them or have attempted correcting them with disappointing results. Credit bureaus make mistakes all the time, and without the proper tactics, they are incredibly slow correcting their mistakes. After a court ruling last week, however, the credit bureaus might soon be changing their ways.

Back in 2009, Julie Miller was denied credit from her bank because Equifax had an incorrect Social Security number, the wrong birth date, and collection accounts that did not belong to Julie listed on her credit report. The next year, she contacted Equifax and attempted to correct these mistakes, but she had no luck. As she was disputing these mistakes, she was denied credit from another bank because of the errors on her Equifax credit report.

In 2011, Julie was finally fed up and decided to take Equifax to court, and 4 years after she was first denied credit, she was awarded $18.6 million by a jury. Her attorneys argued that the denial of credit was a financial hardship for Julie Miller, and Equifax violated her privacy by sharing her personal information on another consumer’s credit report. Furthermore, they did not take proper action to correct their mistake and instead sent her disputes overseas to be processed.

Consumers can try disputing accounts on their credit report, but more often than not, they run into the same problems as Julie Miller and waste years trying to correct their credit reports. Having an ally like My Credit Specialist on your side can make all the difference and get more effective results faster.
